Christmas message from Michael McCormack MP

As 2013 draws to a close, I would like to wish all my constituents all the best for the coming festive season.

This year has again shown the strength and resilience of the people of the Riverina. From the devastating fires which swept through the region at the beginning of the year to the recent frost damage which has struck many of the Riverina’s farmers, 2013 has certainly been a year of highs and lows in our region.

It is remarkable to see people who have suffered losses through the year prepare for 2014 with a quiet optimism. It is people such as these who inspire us to keep working for the betterment of the region.

It has also been a year of many successes in the Riverina. Tumbarumba Shire Council has won the prestigious AR Bluett Award for councils throughout New South Wales and many of the region’s school students have again had great achievements in academic and sporting pursuits. It is always a joy for me to attend school presentations and hear of the many successes of our talented students.

We must also remember and thank the various charity, volunteer service club and emergency service workers from many organisations throughout the Riverina who bring some joy, hope and help to the people who need it most at Christmas.

Please also remember the reason for the season – the birth of Jesus Christ, an event which brought hope and renewal to the world, the message of which still resonates strongly today.

Christmas is a season of peace and joy. It is a great time to catch up with family and friends and reflect on the year that has passed. Sadly, though, there are many for whom Christmas is a time of great loneliness and loss. And we must remember those people at this time of year.

Please also take care on the roads and in and around the water these holidays.

I was privileged to have been re-elected as the Member for Riverina this year and I look forward to working with the people of the Riverina again in 2014.

Wishing you a Happy Christmas and a safe and prosperous New Year.
