2014 Australia Day Message
AUSTRALIA Day is always a very enjoyable time of year. It is a day for us all to gather together and celebrate what is great about our region and the Australian nation.
It’s a day for reflection on what we have achieved as a nation and the potential we have to grow more as a nation in the future. Australia Day in the Riverina is something special – every town and community will have a gathering, each unique and original, celebrating the best of our region and the nation.
Each community has an Australia Day ambassador with a unique story and contribution to make to our Australian nation. This year’s ambassadors will include sportspeople, community champions and the Director and Producer of Wagga Wagga’s feature-length film, Backyard Ashes. Every Australia Day address will draw upon the best of the Australian spirit – a nation of people who have a go and never give in.
One of the wonderful things about Australia Day is that it means something different to everyone and everyone will celebrate in their own way. Whether that’s taking a break from work, watching the cricket, going to many of the picturesque tourist attractions around the region or spending time with family and friends, Australia Day is unique and special to us all.
For me, one of the most enjoyable aspects of Australia Day is welcoming dozens of new Australians in citizenship ceremonies around the region. It is such a privilege to officiate ceremonies and see people from very different backgrounds, with different skills and stories, take their pledge of citizenship and sing the Australian national anthem for the first time. This year, I will attend citizenship celebrations in Narrandera and
Temora and I am very much looking forward to those ceremonies.
The recent fires around the region remind us of those whose Australia Day is spent looking after others – our hardworking emergency services who fight fires, patrol the swimming pools and rivers and treat those who need medical help. I will certainly keep these people in my thoughts this year.
Wishing you and your family a very enjoyable Australia Day.
