INVESTING IN LOCAL PROJECTS FOR NORTH-EAST TASMANIA

Tasmania’s Break O’Day Shire will receive almost $1 million worth of local projects thanks to Federal Liberal and Nationals Government funding.

The town of St Marys will be better protected during times of flood with the installation of a high-tech flood warning system.

The Federal Liberal and Nationals Government is investing $400,000 in the technology which will trigger emergency alerts for the community in times of danger.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development Michael McCormack said St Marys is prone to flooding.

“In times of flood, residents have only had the sound of rushing water and predicted water heights to help them make critical evacuation decisions,” Mr McCormack said.

“This new system will provide advanced warning that water levels are likely to reach a level of flooding that could close roads or threaten businesses or houses.”

The Nationals’ Senator for Tasmania Steve Martin said he’s spent last week on the East Coast of Tasmania listening to locals.

“This is part of my agenda of getting a fair share for regional Tasmania and a concrete example of the Nationals in Government building stronger Tasmanian communities,” said Senator Martin.

Liberal Senator for Tasmania Jonathan Duniam said the Government is also investing $500,000 to bring the Old Tasmanian Hotel in Fingal back to its glory days.

“The Old Tasmanian Hotel is iconic to the Fingal township and a focal point of community activities. Built in the early 1800s, the pub has such a rich history and I’m excited to see it transform into one of Tasmania’s finest boutique hotels,” Senator Duniam said.

“The Liberals and Nationals are investing in local projects because we understand Australia is made of more than big infrastructure projects.

“I’m proud to have won this project for my local community and am proud to be seeing it through to fruition.”
