Local issues should be at election forefront: McCormack

5 August 2013

THE Nationals’ Member for Riverina, Michael McCormack, says local issues must be at the forefront of the debate during this election campaign.

“I am very pleased the Prime Minister has finally announced September 7 as the date of the election,” Mr McCormack said.

“It is important our focus remains on what is best for the Riverina and who can deliver the most for the region in the next Parliament.

“Only the people of Warringah in Sydney and Griffith in Queensland will get the chance to vote for Tony Abbott or Kevin Rudd,” Mr McCormack said.

“This election is a chance for locals to have their say on the issues affecting the Riverina.

“Cost of living is one of the most important issues for locals this election. Only The Nationals have a plan to abolish the carbon tax, and cut personal and company taxes to grow a stronger economy and keep more money in the pockets of Riverina families,” Mr McCormack said.

“I will continue to focus on water allocation. It is crucial Riverina farmers have conditions which allow them to continue to grow food and fibre and also open them to new markets. The Coalition will cap water buybacks at 1500 gigalitres and ensure farmers in the Murray Darling Basin get a fair go,” Mr McCormack said.

“We also have a plan to substantially reduce the tipping point for the Foreign Investment Review Board to examine whether the acquisition of Australian agricultural land and agribusinesses by foreign entities is in the national interest.

“The Nationals have also led the charge against the proposed sale of GrainCorp to American multi-national Archer Daniels Midland. The sale was the focus of recent public forums with growers in Griffith and Wagga Wagga, to which The Nationals’ Leader, Warren Truss, came to listen to local farmers’ concerns,” Mr
McCormack said.

“Defence superannuation pension entitlements will also be a focus during this election campaign. I am very pleased with the Coalition’s announcement an elected Coalition Government would provide the fair
indexation military superannuation pensions, something for which I have been vigorously lobbying.

“My plan will ensure Riverina families, farmers, small business people and Veterans are the focus of this election campaign and The Nationals’ positive plan for the future of regional Australia,” Mr McCormack said.
