Northparkes Mines praised

23 November 2016

The Nationals’ Federal Member for Riverina and Minister for Small Business, Michael McCormack today congratulated Northparkes Mines (Northparkes) on its accreditation by the White Ribbon Foundation on becoming the first mine in Australia to be recognised for its commitment to the prevention of and response to violence against women.

“Northparkes continues to forge the way, not just in firsts for mining, having last year become the first fully automated underground mine in the world, but to now be recognised by the national body advocating for a safe society free from violence and abuse towards women is commendable,” Mr McCormack said.

“As the local Federal representative for the Riverina, I am proud that such a large and highly regarded employer within my electorate is a leader in this area of cultural change.

“Since Parkes became part of the Riverina electorate I have heard nothing but positive news about how successful Northparkes is and how genuine its efforts are to be leaders in its field and create an inclusive, supportive and respectful workplace for all employees.

“Given that today is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, I am also really pleased to learn that 115 male employees from Northparkes have taken the oath, committing to stand up and speak out against violence towards men and women, joining 195,000 others nationally.

“Again, I congratulate Northparkes on its achievement and acknowledge its commitment to this noteworthy and very serious campaign. One that I encourage everyone in the community to support,” Mr McCormack said.

White Ribbon accreditation lasts for three years, so long as an ongoing commitment to the White Ribbon principles is maintained.
