WORKS to transform a Horsham roundabout have now started at one of the city’s busiest intersections along the Western Highway in regional Victoria.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development Michael McCormack said works to remodel the existing roundabout to improve safety and traffic flow at the intersection would deliver major benefits for motorists, local producers and freight operators.
“Upgrading this intersection will improve safety and reduce congestion along one of Victoria’s busiest freight and travel routes,” Mr McCormack said.
Victorian Minister for Roads and Road Safety Luke Donnellan said the roundabout works will deliver major benefits for drivers, local producers and freight operators.
“We’re making the O’Callaghans intersection safer, more accessible and improving traffic flow for the more than 26,000 vehicles that use it every day,” Mr Donnellan said.
Assistant Minister to the Deputy Prime Minister and Federal Member for Mallee Andrew Broad said the improved intersection would deliver a range of changes to keep traffic moving and reduce driver errors.
“Adelaide-bound drivers will no longer need to cross lanes within the roundabout to exit and the right-hand turn from the Western Highway into O’Callaghans Parade will also be removed,” Mr Broad said.
State Member for Western Victoria Jaala Pulford said the changes will help to limit human errors at the intersection.
“These works are all about reducing the potential for driver error and creating a better path through one of Horsham’s busiest intersections,” Ms Pulford said.
Works on the intersection will continue until December 2018 and motorists may experience some delays throughout construction.
The project is part of the $20 million Western Highway – Stawell to South Australia Border Upgrade, which is jointly funded by the Australian and Victorian governments on a 50:50 basis.
