TOURLE STREET DUPLICATION AT KOORAGANG ALMOST COMPLETE

22 June 2018

A NEW two-lane bridge over the Hunter River in Newcastle will be fully open to traffic from the end of next week. The bridge delivers faster, safer travel for motorists and freight operators and brings the upgraded Tourle Street and Cormorant Road corridor project at Kooragang to completion.

Deputy Prime Minister and Federal Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Michael McCormack said the Liberal and Nationals’ Government had committed more than $75 billion over the next 10 years to a pipeline of new and upgraded transport infrastructure projects across Australia.

“Our infrastructure pipeline is delivering vital investments in key corridors across Australia, linking industry to export markets and people to vital services, such as in Newcastle where we have better connected the industrial district of Kooragang to the broader region,” Mr McCormack said.

NSW Minister for Roads, Maritime and Freight Melinda Pavey said this project was jointly funded by Australian and NSW Governments to improve traffic flow for the more than 33,000 motorists, including 3,000 heavy vehicle drivers, which travel along the road each day.

“With this major upgrade work now completed, members of the local community including businesses, tourists, commuters and cyclists, can now reap the rewards of a safer and faster journey to Newcastle City, Port Stephens and Williamtown Airport,” Mrs Pavey said.

Senator for New South Wales Jim Molan said the project included duplicating 3.8 kilometres of the road between Industrial Drive and Egret Street at Kooragang to provide two lanes in each direction and a new two-lane bridge.

“Upgrades also included providing 2.5-metre-wide shoulders along Cormorant Road for on-road cyclists,” Senator Molan said.

NSW Parliamentary Secretary for Planning, the Central Coast and the Hunter Scot MacDonald said the community would immediately benefit from these works having completed six months ahead of schedule and coming in under budget.

“This project improves the vital connection at Kooragang Island, which is home to a major industrial and employment centre and is part of the world’s largest coal port,” Mr MacDonald said.

Motorists are advised some minor work will continue to finalise the project, which is expected to be completed by early July, weather permitting.

The project was jointly funded by the Australian and NSW Governments on a 50:50 basis.
