Today’s confirmation of the inclusion of a Papua New Guinean Team in the National Rugby League (NRL), is an important step in the ongoing effort to strengthen ties and promote people-to-people connections in the Pacific.
The Coalition will, however, seek further clarification on the specific details of this initiative, in particular how the $600 million will be spent.
Shadow Minister for Foreign Affairs, Simon Birmingham, said that partnerships like this build on the Coalition’s strong record of strengthening Australia’s relations with our Pacific neighbours.
“The Coalition has long held the view that sport can be a powerful tool for fostering deeper connections between nations,” Senator Birmingham said.
“The $600 million investment is significant and a detailed breakdown from the Government on how these funds will be allocated is essential to build confidence in both Australia and PNG,” Senator Birmingham said.
Shadow Minister for Sport, Anne Ruston, echoed these sentiments.
“Australia and Papua New Guinea share core values, including in relation to sport and its ability to provide important benefits to our communities,” Senator Ruston said.
“Rugby league, in particular, holds significant cultural importance in Papua New Guinea, and their inclusion in the NRL will go a long way in strengthening ties between our two countries.
“However, Australians deserve further transparency on the costs and details associated with this taxpayer-funded commitment.”
Shadow Minister for International Development and the Pacific, Michael McCormack, said the cultural significance of Rugby League to the people of PNG could not be understated.
“Papua New Guinea is the only country in the world with Rugby League as its national sport,” Mr McCormack said.
“The Coalition continues to offer bipartisan support for responsible and transparent initiatives that enhance Australia’s relationship with our Pacific family.”
The Coalition is committed to supporting initiatives that strengthen Australia’s relationships with our Pacific neighbours.
We look forward to working with the Government to ensure that this investment delivers tangible benefits for both nations.
