Wagga Wagga and District Greyhound Racing Club has been saved from closure, delivering a major win for the Riverina community and the local greyhound racing industry.
Federal Member for Riverina Michael McCormack has welcomed the decision, saying the community had made its voice heard loud and clear.
“Local people stood up and fought for its greyhound track and today we can say that fight has been won,” Mr McCormack said.
“For nearly 100 years, greyhound racing has been part of the fabric of Wagga Wagga.
“This is about more than racing. It is about local jobs, families, trainers, owners and a community institution which has worked hard to secure its future.”
Wagga Wagga Greyhounds had the support of its Federal and State Members and Mayor and I was proud to stand alongside this great club to get this great outcome.
Mr McCormack paid tribute to Wagga Greyhound Club President Ben Talbot and the club committee members and supporters for their determination throughout the campaign.
“Ben Talbot and the entire club committee never gave up. They put forward the case for Wagga and made sure the voice of local trainers, owners and supporters was heard,” Mr McCormack said.
“They have fought hard for this club and deserve enormous credit for today’s outcome.”
Mr McCormack said the result showed what could be achieved when a regional community stood together.
“Wagga has sent a very clear message, don’t underestimate the strength of regional communities,” Mr McCormack said.
“This is a great day for Wagga and for everyone who got behind the campaign to save our track.”
