CHARLES STURT UNIVERSITY FACING SIGNIFICANT JOB CUTS

27 June 2025

The announcement by Charles Sturt University regarding its financial position and that it is facing significant job cuts is deeply concerning.

I have spoken to Charles Sturt University Vice-Chancellor Renée Leon PSM about the current troubling situation.

The Federal Government needs to take heed of these troubling times – it can’t just turn a blind eye to regionally based universities and regional students.

It is not only Charles Sturt University haemorrhaging money, it is a trend being felt across the tertiary sector.

This Government has now been in for more than three years – there are no more excuses – it desperately needs to find a way to support regional tertiary students and higher education jobs in the regions. It cannot be left to metropolitan sandstone universities to educate the nation’s best and brightest students.

The Government has talked a lot about the Australian Universities Accord, funding equity students and supporting regional universities, but it is now time for action. Regional universities need funding and they need it now … not in the far-off future.

I have written to Education Minister Jason Clare to impress on him just how serious this situation is and to implore the Federal Government to explore all measures to assist the ailing regional universities sector.

Charles Sturt University has shown, since it was established in 1989, it delivers quality education outcomes and it needs to be given every opportunity to continue to do so into the future.
