“As the horror of what happened around Archer Park in Bondi at 6.47pm last night continues to unfold, it is clear this was a targeted attack on Australia’s Jewish community celebrating the start of Hanukkah.
“The New South Wales Police have declared it a terrorist event. The Australian Federal Police and ASIO have indicated they will work with NSW Police as a part of the joint counter-terrorism team.
“At this stage up to 16 people have died. It is reported up to 38 more have been injured, including two police officers. Sadly, some of those 38 have catastrophic injuries.
“This is cold-blooded murder. It is evil in its rawest form.
“This is not the Australian way of life.
“This nation was once the envy of the world for its peaceful society, laidback disposition and a relatively safe community for all – this is clearly no longer the case.
“Much will be said in the coming days and months regarding this truly shocking incident. Swift and decisive action will need to be taken – Australians will want for nothing less. Hard questions need to be asked.
“Often, along with events of this magnitude of horror, there are extraordinary acts of heroism – the footage widely shared online of a brave person who risked his life disarming one of the shooters is truly amazing. This act has surely saved the lives of many. And, as always, our first responders who run towards the danger to save lives and eliminate threats.
“My thoughts are with the victims and their families and friends who must be overwhelmed with grief and loss – no words can express the sorrow being felt but know that Australians stand with you in your darkest hour.”
