Riverina Councils to share in $8.4 million in Roads to Recovery funding

1 October 2014

RIVERINA MP Michael McCormack has welcomed the delivery of the Federal Government’s $2.1 billion Roads to Recovery Program, in which Riverina Councils are eligible for more than $8.4 million for local road construction and street repairs in this financial year.

“This is fantastic news for the Riverina region. Our allocation of $8,410,213 for the 2014-15 year will enable the thirteen Councils in our electorate to build roads, repair streets and create better access across our communities,” Mr McCormack said.

The Nationals’ Leader and Deputy Prime Minister, Warren Truss, will write to all Councils to advise them of their full allocation from 2014-15 to 2018-19.

Mr McCormack said the Roads to Recovery Program will focus on local roads and is designed for local Councils to make road spending decisions based on local needs, without inference from Canberra.

“This is a critical component of the Roads to Recovery Program – it will preference local needs and local people making those decisions. This will ensure funding is directed to where it is needed most in local communities,” Mr McCormack said.

“Local Councils can lodge their applications from this month, which will allow payments made under the new program to begin from this November.

“The Nationals in Government are supporting our Councils with the ongoing maintenance of Australia’s local road infrastructure through a successful program which preferences local decision making,” Mr McCormack said.
