Energy prices cripple SA business

SOUTH Australia’s sky-rocketing electricity prices are a handbrake to the State’s small businesses, according to the first meeting of the nationwide Small Business Roadshow. 

Starting today in Kingswood, Small Business Minister Michael McCormack and local MP Nicolle Flint heard how South Australia’s energy costs hamper growth and expansion, leaving small business uncertain about its future. 

Small business Roadshow kicks off in Adelaide

TAX cuts, reductions in red tape and levelling the playing field for small business through fairer competition policy is front and centre in a nationwide roadshow starting today, Small Business Minister Michael McCormack says.

Starting in suburban Adelaide, the roadshow will meet directly with small businesses over shop counters, farm gates and kitchen tables in home businesses, as well as local forums, as the Small Business Minister continues fighting for a fairer deal for Australia’s 2.1 million small businesses.

Cootamundra Meatworks’ closure

The announcement of Cootamundra Meatworks’ closure is a devastating blow for the community.

This means around 200 jobs will go in Cootamundra, with the factory set to close next Friday.

As Cootamundra’s largest employer, the impact of this for the Meatworks’ workers, their families, friends and the community will be hard-felt right across the region, as well as in local butchers and other small businesses to which the Meatworks is a supplier.

ANOTHER week, another couple of thought bubbles from Shadow Assistant Treasurer Dr Andrew Leigh, says Small Business Minister Michael McCormack.

“The Shadow Assistant Treasurer has been quite busy this week, marching up and down the press gallery to shop-out his ideas on everything from small business protection to petrol prices,” Mr McCormack said.

Levelling the playing field for Aussie small businesses online

SENSIBLE changes to Goods and Services Tax (GST) collection online were introduced to the Parliament this week as the Turnbull-Joyce Government delivered another 2016-17 Budget measure to boost small business, Small Business Minister Michael McCormack says.

“The Government understands that small business is the job creator in our economy,” Mr McCormack said.

Indigenous business central in Closing the Gap ON 13 FEBRUARY 2017

INDIGENOUS Procurement Policy (IPP) has delivered on the Government’s targets for Indigenous business procurement and is set to be supercharged, Small Business Minister Michael McCormack says.

“The target of 3 per cent Indigenous procurement by 2020 has been a focus of this Government since the IPP was introduced in the 2015-16 financial year,” Mr McCormack said.

Horticulture code strikes right balance

THE Government response to the Horticulture Code of Conduct strikes the right balance and will ensure a range of improvements within Australia’s horticulture sector to support constructive and fair business between growers and traders, Small Business Minister Michael McCormack says.

Mr McCormack, who has responsibility for consumer affairs and mandatory codes, said the Horticulture Code is a mandatory industry code under section 51AE of the Competition and Consumer Act 2010. It is enforced by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC).

They came, they trekked and Tumbatrek triumphed

Those who participated in the annual Tumbatrek event on Saturday conquered the trek having taken in spectacular views, made new friends and perhaps went home with a few blisters and a bit of sun-burn, but Tumbarumba and local tourism proved to be as triumphant according to the Nationals’ Member for Riverina and Minister for Small Business, Michael McCormack.
