Communities to fight for right to grow food

Riverina irrigation communities will not sit idly while the Government contemplates carrying out ill-conceived recommendations to strip away much of their productive water used to grow food.

Nationals’ Member for Riverina Michael McCormack has commended people of the Coleambally and Murrumbidgee Irrigation Areas for showing their preparedness to fight for their water rights.

The Murray-Darling Basin Draft Plan ignores the farmers who feed the nation, months of consultation with regional communities and the Independent MP who helps keep the Prime Minister in The Lodge.

Draft must sustain communities as well as environment: McCormack

The Federal Government must show leadership in the water debate if the Murray-Darling Basin Draft, to be released tomorrow, reflects the leaked version and does not provide a triple bottom line approach according to Nationals’ Member for Riverina Michael McCormack.

Centrelink will provide booth in Batlow

Nationals’ Federal Member for Riverina Michael McCormack is pleased to advise that Centrelink will provide a staff member at the Batlow Co-Op on Monday 28 November.

The Centrelink advisor will be available between 9am – 12.30pm. They will assist people to assess their eligibility for such Centrelink assistance as the Newstart Allowance, Child Support and other social services.  There will also be the opportunity to be linked with job services Australia to look for other employment.

Still seething from the deliberate leak of the latest Murray-Darling Basin draft, Mr McCormack ended his speech with, “My people are not going to cop that lying down—and nor should they.”

Nationals’ Federal Member for Riverina Michael McCormack is not surprised the entire Murray-Darling Basin draft plan has been leaked to the media.

“The fact Murray-Darling Basin Authority chairman Craig Knowles is blaming environmentalists for spilling the information early just says it all,” Mr McCormack said.
